site)
I am not a credit expert so if you need assistance
seek the advice of a professional. Though I do have some basic
information to share that may be helpful.
Who can get a copy of their
credit report free?
Residents of Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New
Jersey and Vermont are entitled to one free copy of their Credit
Report per calendar year and residents of Georgia are entitled to two
free copies of their Credit Report per year. Be careful you may have
to follow specific ordering guidelines to get your free report, Some
do not allow internet orders and must be ordered via telephone.
If you have been denied either credit, insurance or
employment or suffered adverse action within the past 60 days as a
result of information contained in a personal credit report then you
are entitled to a complimentary copy of your personal credit report
from the credit reporting company that supplied the report. The
company that denies you based on information contained in your credit
report should tell you the company the information was obtained from
and how to obtain a copy of this report.
What are pre-screened credit
list?
Credit companies make additional income by selling
limited information about you to insurance companies and financial
institutions. That is why you receive pre-approved credit offers and
other offers via direct marketing. You can stop you information from
being sold by opting out. It is a free service by the major reporting
companies that allows you to remove your name for two years or
permanently. To remove your name call 1-888-567-8688.
This may also help protect you from identity theft by
limiting the number of places your personal information appears. It
will also reduce the number of direct marketing solicitations you
receive for credit and insurance products.
What are my rights as a
consumer?
Read
the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)
